Bi-level Race Horses Top |
¶ excellent condition, like new.
Nickel on brass. Spins fine. Fine engraved
letters and numbers. Another picture
of it. .. ... ..... . This is top #2 as seen in
the picture and chart on
my put and take personal collection page. ¶ The top you will be getting looks like this one -- horses in the same order. It shows the "Odds On, Pat. App'd. For" engraved on the top of the spinner. ¶ the horses names are (in this order): Yutoi-Envoy-Harrier, Scamp, Sicyon, Golden Corn. ¶ "Odds On, Pat. App'd. For" is engraved on the top of the spinner. Famous British race horses, c. 1920's. (Yutoi was born 1917 and Golden Corn 1919. In the U.S., anyway, horses raced about 2,3 4 years after birth. Please correct me if I am wrong about that.) Probably made for the British market. ¶ The odds on top spin independently of the bottom (horses' names.) All metal. ¶ the odds are: DISQ,10-1,2-1, 4-1,6-1,8-1 |

Bi-level Race Horses Top SOLD |
¶ rare, and in very
fine condition. Other
pictures via this link, before I polished
the top! All a nice silvery, hefty metal, not
sure of the type of metal. Very
attractive. Spins very well.
This is top #3 as seen
in the picture and chart on
my put and take personal collection page. ¶ the top level spins and gives these odds: DISQ, 5-1, 2-1, 8-1, 6-1, 4-1 ¶ the famous horse names on the bottom (1940s mainly) are: Citation--Assault--Zev--Whirlaway-- Man-O-War-- Stymie |

Bi-level Race Horses Top |
¶ Nice condition. Spins fine.
Actual Put & Take you
will be getting is virtually like the
one pictured here except that the odds top part
has the white ink largely gone, but the numbers are engraved
and you can add ink/paint/soap to show the odds
more clearly, though fine the way it is now. Very nice shiny
nickel or silver plate brass on the bottom.
Serrated knob as in upper picture. Viewing
from above, you can often read "Patented April
1921," but this old one is worn there (as are many) -- you can
read some of it like "patented, April .. .....9 ....." ¶ about 1-1/4", 32 grams. All metal -- looks like a steel upper level and silver or nickel plated brass bottom level. Both levels rotate independently when you spin the top. ¶ from about the 1920's. ¶ bi-level in that the odds (on top) spin/move independently of the horse names (on bottom). ¶ the horse names are: Grey Lag, Colin, Man-O-War, Morvich, Zev, and Spark Plug. ¶ very fine condition. ¶ full details and another picture are on my put and take personal collection page. It is #4 in the picture and table near the bottom of that page. As noted there, these PT4 (#4) tops were also made without the patent date engraved on the top of the top. Here is one I sold recently. ¶ Here is another one of these I recently purchased for rather little. Yours for only $45.00. It is in very fine condition/engraving, except that the nickel-silvery suface coating didn't go on so well in manufacture. Plus it was photographed in a strange yellow light. ¶ Here is another one I have for sale. |

Bi-level Race Horses Top |
¶ this is top #5 as seen in the
picture and chart on
my put and take personal collection page. Spins fine. ¶ the one for sale here now is in very fine condition. ¶ What is REALLY GREAT and unusual about this one is that the engraved letters/numbers that circle the top from above are clear and easy to read: "Patented April 1921 No. 1374243." (The "9" in "1921" is not too clear, and I might be off a numeral in that long patent number.) Often you see these engravings virtually worn all away. ¶ the horse names are: Morvich, Pillory, Lucky Hour, Bunting, Colin, and Man-O-War, all famous winning U.S. racehorses from 1907 to 1921. ¶ here is another one I recently sold. And here too. |

6-sided brass Put & Take |
¶ 6-sided, c. 1.25", wonderful spinner, easy
to spin --
works well every time and spins forever!.
You wouldn't want a better
one! The one you will be getting is
virtually like the one pictured here.
You wouldn't notice the difference!
.. ... .... If you want a Put and Take top to play with,
you couldn't find a better one -- so easy to spin it,
and the spin lasts so long. ¶ reads horizontally: take all, put two, take one, all put, take two and put one. ¶ about 1-1/4" long |

6-sided plastic GAFFED modern Put & Take |
¶ 6-sided, sturdy heavy plastic, 1-3/4." Very
well made, modern. ¶ unusual features: gaffed for "cheating:" spin it to the right, and 90% of the time a "P" (put) will show; spin it to the left (counter-clockwise) and 90% of time a "T" will show -- works as such because it is weighted inside! (This is REALLY sold only as an interesting novelty. You REALLY wouldn't want to use it for cheating/gambling because, morality aside, players would get suspicious when the top would land on Put 90% of time!) ¶ sides read: T3, P2, T2, P3, T1, P1. ¶ attractiveness: very ¶ readability: excellent ¶ handle: very easy to pick up. ¶ ease and quality of spin: spins fine when you twist to the right, but I found it difficult to spin it to the left, but should improve with practice. |

left-handed (rare) 6-sided brass Put & Take |
¶ very RARE left-handed brass
Put and

read it, the stem is on the left side!
(I have only 1 or 2 left-handed ones in
my personal collection.) ¶ 1-1/8" ¶ 6-sided: all put, take two, put one, take all, put two, and take one. ¶ get a valid spin each time. Most of the time it is a smooth, upright long spin. Infrequently the spin is valid but wobbly. |

8-sided celluloid Put & Take |
¶ 8-sided, celluloid (or very similar
heavy plastic), 1-1/2" long P&T
top. Typical of celluloid, there
is a nice ivory-like grain "printed" on the top.
Click
here for another picture of the P&T. ¶ unusual features: longer (1.5") and wider (about 1") than the usual P&T. Most stiking is the ivory-like, celluloid-like grain on the top. ¶ 8 sides read: * (star = "take all"), P1, T2, P3, T1, 0 (zero = "all put"), T3, P4. ¶ attractiveness: yes -- soft, light yellow-tan. ¶ readability: OK, though the "T3" side is light, ¶ handle: short handle to grip, , but I had no trouble grabbing and spinning it. ¶ ease and quality of spin: very good -- nice upright, long spin. ¶ I have just acquired another one of these: noticeably larger, clearer/sharper inscriptions (T3, P3, etc.), which does not spin as well or smooth, but looks great and spins well enough. You may have it for the same $35 price. |

6-sided brass French Put and Take |
France. Brass, 6-sided, excellent condition
and patina, easy to pick up and spin. Spins well. c. 1935. This old solid brass spinning dice measures 1 1/8 inches long and is in a excellent condition. No damage. The 6 sides are marked: ¶ Galeries Lafayette -- take all ¶ Prenez1 -- take 1 ¶ Mettez 1 -- put 1 ¶ Mettez Chacun -- "put each one" -- all put ¶ Prenez 2 -- take 2 ¶ Mettez 2 -- put 2 The brass Galeries Lafayette Put and Take is for sale here, not the box and instructions. Click to see the original old instruction sheet and original box. ("Toupie" means top/spinner or whirlgig.) Seller told me "Galeries Lafayette is a famous chain of shops in France. I believe they've been around for over 100 years. I've previously sold antique shop advertising handles with their name and mark on them." left-handed 6-sided plastic pen (pencil & ink) -dice- compass-top Put and Take |
¶ 6-sided, plastic combination Put and
Take. Excellent condition. Put and take is
1-1/4." The pen is 7." Note that the Put and Take
is the rare "left-handed" type. ¶ Click here for bigger picture. ¶ Wonderful vintage conversation peice, must-have for the Put and Take collector. This is a very rare piece. It is the first one I have seen on eBay all these years. I have one in my personal collection (click here to see it, near the top of that page), and it is in poor condition with parts missing. ¶ As shown, it disassembles to be a: put & take top, 3 small dice, a working compass and a presumably working mechanical lead pencil. Not shown here, but I just discovered that the red tip end also unscrews to show a metal tip for a dip-ink pen! ¶ sides read: take all, put all, take one, put one, put two and takes two. ¶ the Put and Take top spins very poorly even though it is in mint condition, so I guess it was made poorly spin-wise to begin with. Of course, the game can be played even if the top does not spin -- it flops about and lands on one side randomly. And as noted, this wonderful, vintage piece is sold as a unique collectible, not as a playing piece! |

"O-Boy," chip-size brass spinner Put & Take |
"O-BOY" Bonne Chance Corporation metal put
& take spinner -- 1-1/2" across (the size of a poker chip!).
A wonderful
put and take -- it uses the term
"win" instead of "take," and "lose"
instead of "put." Fine condition,
spins terrifically, endlessly. A bit soiled,
but I made no effort to clean it up, though it is
OK as it is now. Very desirable piece. To

Slightly disconcerting at first is that the sections on the paper strip do not line up perfectly with the six flat sides, as seen in the picture on the left. But the players would get used to that, and this is well-priced as a collectible. ¶ handle: short wood handle, could have been longer, but adequate. ¶ ease and quality of spin: playable spin each time, though some spins wobble more than others at first, but with practice you soon get all smooth, long spins. |
